We, the undersigned, support the protection of World Stage Live (formerly World Cafe Live) as a vital cultural institution serving the artists, youth, and communities of Philadelphia. World Stage Live—formerly known as World Cafe Live—has long been a cornerstone of Philadelphia's music and arts ecosystem. For years, it has provided a stage for emerging artists, a gathering place for the community, and a platform for cultural expression. At a critical moment in its history, when the institution faced financial instability and the risk of closure, a leadership effort stepped forward to stabilize operations, preserve jobs, and keep the doors open. This effort included substantial financial contributions—publicly asserted to exceed $2 million—along with operational support, volunteer leadership, and a renewed commitment to expanding access and inclusion. This intervention helped ensure that the venue did not disappear. Today, the future of this institution—and the progress made during that period—is uncertain. There are growing public concerns regarding: • The transparency of financial contributions used to stabilize the organization • Whether the full story of who supported and preserved the institution has been shared with the public • The role and influence of institutional stakeholders, including University of Pennsylvania • Decisions surrounding branding changes, including the use or promotion of "World Stage Live" • Whether leadership changes may displace those who contributed to saving the organization • Whether progress toward broader community inclusion—especially for emerging and Black artists—is at risk This petition does not seek conflict. It seeks clarity, accountability, and protection of what has been built. We Call for the Following: 1. Full Transparency Public disclosure of financial contributions, funding sources, and material support used to sustain the institution during its period of crisis. 2. Recognition of Contributions Formal acknowledgment of the individuals and leadership team who provided financial and operational support to stabilize and preserve the venue. 3. Clarity on Institutional Influence Clear communication regarding the role of institutional stakeholders, including University of Pennsylvania, in decisions affecting leadership, branding, and operations. 4. Explanation of Branding Changes A transparent explanation of how and why "World Stage Live" has been introduced or promoted, and what it represents for the future of the institution. 5. Protection of Community Access A commitment to maintaining and expanding inclusive programming that supports emerging artists, youth, and historically underrepresented communities. 6. Community Voice in Governance The establishment of a community advisory structure to ensure that artists and local stakeholders have visibility into decisions shaping the venue's future. 7. Protection Against Reversal of Progress Safeguards to ensure that efforts to modernize, stabilize, and expand access are not undone without public awareness and engagement. Why This Matters Philadelphia proudly calls itself a music city. That identity depends on venues that support artists, nurture talent, and reflect the diversity of the community. When a cultural institution is preserved through extraordinary effort and sacrifice, that effort must be acknowledged—not erased. The public deserves truth. The artists deserve a platform.
